A shopper may enter a store with one product in mind, but the final decision can depend on how clearly the store presents the available options.
For retailers, the issue is not whether signage, shelving, and layout matter. It is whether those elements remain aligned after fixtures are installed, products are placed, and promotional materials are added.
Place Signage Where It Supports the Product
A sign can have the right message and still be ineffective when it is too far from the product, blocked by a display, or difficult to connect with the shelf below it.
A 2025 Journal of Marketing study found that digital signage increased the likelihood of shoppers purchasing featured products by an average of 8.1%. The effect was stronger when the sign was placed closer to the product.
Make Sure the Finished Space Works as Planned
Planograms and layouts show how products, fixtures, signs, and displays should work together. The finished space, however, may be affected by fixture variations, missing labels, packaging, or added promotional materials.
Before an area is approved, teams should confirm that:
- Products are in the correct positions.
- Signs and shelf labels match the merchandise.
- Fixtures and displays are complete and stable.
- Products remain visible and easy to reach.
- Displays do not block signs or narrow aisles.
- Packaging and installation materials have been removed.
Reviewing the full selling area can reveal issues that may be missed when installation, merchandising, and graphics are checked separately. It also helps confirm that the space is not only complete, but ready for shoppers.
The Work Behind a Shoppable Store
A shoppable store depends on many details coming together, including product placement, fixtures, graphics, shelf labels, and the surrounding space.
Merchco supports these connected areas through merchandising, fixture and graphics installation, electronic shelf label installation, interior construction, and program management. This range of experience gives its teams a practical understanding of how different project scopes come together at the point of sale.
